DANVILLE, Va. - Henry Adams Davis died Friday, December 12, 2008, at Roman Eagle Memorial Home in Danville, Virginia. He was born on February 10, 1920, in Lynchburg, Virginia, the son of James T. Davis and Sue DuVal Adams Davis. He was predeceased by his first wife, Madelon Jessee Davis, and then married Erma Abbott of Greensboro, North Carolina who survives.

He attended the United States Naval Academy at Annapolis. He entered World War II as a 1st Lieutenant attached to the 9th Army Air Force at Normandy Beach. After the Battle of St. Lo, he was assigned with the 29th Tactical Air Command under the 9th U.S. Army. He spent the winter of 1944 to 1945 in Belgium during the Battle of the Bulge. Stationed in Germany at the end of the war, he signed up for the Army of Occupation in Germany and served there until June 6, 1946. He retired as Major U.S. Army Reserve.

Upon returning to Lynchburg, he went to work for C & P Telephone Company as an engineer and worked in Lynchburg, Danville, Roanoke, and Richmond, Virginia. In Roanoke, he and Madelon also developed real estate, building custom homes. Upon retirement, he moved to Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, Sarasota, Florida and Greensboro, North Carolina.

He was a lifelong member of the Baptist Church and volunteered for the Salvation Army.

He is survived by two children Henry Adams Davis, Jr. and wife, Hope, of Chatham, Virginia and Lynn D. Kenan of High Point, North Carolina. Also surviving are three grandchildren, Paul A. Davis and wife, Rebecca, of Greensboro, North Carolina, Janet C. Davis of Danville, and Rachel B. Davis of Chatham; one grandchild, Lydia Anna Davis; four sisters, Lucy D. Gunn of Williamsburg, Virginia, Nancy D. Clark of Spokane, West Virginia, Sue D. Breeding, and Virginia Clare D. Wallace of Lynchburg, Virginia, and one brother, James T. Davis, Jr. of Lynchburg, Virginia.

Services will be held on Sunday, December 14, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at the Wrenn-Yeatts Funeral Home and Cremation Services North Main Chapel by the Reverend Monty Fox. A graveside service will be conducted on Monday, December 15, 2008 at 2:00 p.m. at Westminster Gardens in Greensboro, North Carolina. The family will receive friends at the Wrenn-Yeatts North Main Chapel immediately following the service and other times at the residence of his son Henry and Hope Davis, Jr. at 3188 Fairview Road, Chatham, Virginia 24532.

In Lieu of flowers memorials should be made to the Salvation Army at 123 Henry St. Danville, Virginia 24540 or to the charity of your choice.
