James Cardwell Died at Canyonville this Morning
WILL HOLD FUNERAL ON FRIDAY
Deceased was Employed as Government Mail Carrier in this County for Over 20 Years -- Two Sisters Survive

James Cardwell, better known among his friends as "Doc," died at Canyonville this morning after an illness of several days. The funeral will be held there Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, interment of the remains following in the Canyonville cemetery.
Mr. Cardwell was a native of Tennessee and came to Oregon in the year 1859. A few years later he accepted a position with the United States Government as a mail carrier, and continued to work in that capacity for more than 20 years. Prior to being found in a helpless condition by friends Sunday morning, Mr. Cardwell was last seen by residents of Canyonville on the preceding Thursday evening. At that time he had not been feeling as well as usual for several days. When found on the following Sunday he was partly undressed and was lying on the bed uncovered. He was baqdly chilled and unconscious. Physicians were summoned and a subsequent examination indicated that he had sufferred from a stroke of paralysis. Mr. Cardwell was about 75 years of age and was never married. He is survived by two sisters, Mrs. Sarah Poole and Mrs. Caroline Gibbs, and is a cousin of Representative W. W. Cardwell, of this city. The physicians are of the opnion that Mr. Cardwell suffered from his fatal affliction on either Thursday or Friday night. As a result of his helpless condition he laid on the bed unattended until Sunday morning when friends visited his home. For some time past he had lived in a small cottage at Canyonville.
Mr. Cardwell was a man of the typical Oregon pioneer type and had a host of close friends in Douglas County. Prior to engaging in the Government service as a mail carrier it is understood that Mr. Cardwell spent several years mining on Coffey Creek.
During the early staging days in this country Mr. Cardwell was a conspicuous figure about Canyonville, where he made his headquarters. Of late years he had visited in Roseburg but a few times.
