Oren Lavern Abbott, 88, of Palmer died Thursday, Oct. 7, 2010, at Heritage Living Center in St. Paul. Oren was born July 3, 1922, at Mascot to Lawrence and Margaret (Paehlmen) Abbott.

Survivors are: his wife, Mildred of St. Paul; daughters and sons-in-law, Vicki and LeRoy Zehr and Sandi Schlueter, all of Palmer and Debra and David Swadley of Creston, Iowa; eight grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and sister, Viola Bevard of Colorado and a host of friends and relatives.

He moved with his family to the Lexington area where he received his education. In 1940 he then moved to Cozad. He bought a truck and was in the trucking business. He met and married Mildred White on Oct. 21, 1942, in Lexington. This marriage was blessed with three daughters, Vicki, Sandi and Debra. Oren entered the Army on Nov. 9, 1942. He was injured and was medically discharged in February 1944.

He started in the honey bee business in July 1952 and moved with his family to Palmer in July of 1959 where he continued the business. Oren retired in 1980 from the bee business. He then built, owned and operated Country Package store until 1988 when health reasons made him retire. Oren moved to the Nebraska Veterans Home in Grand Island in January 2009 and later that year he moved to the Heritage Living Center in St. Paul.

He was a member of the United Methodist Church in Palmer and a permanent member of the Burton Beyer American Legion Post 120 in Palmer, where he served as commander for a number of years. He was very active in the Legion. He was also a permanent member of the Disabled American Veterans.

Oren enjoyed his beekeeping business, gardening and flowers as well as square dancing.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers Earnest, Clifford, Clarence, Chester and Amos Abbott; sister, Altra Patton and son-in-law, Jack Schlueter.
