Dust To Dust

STAKELEY - Died at he residence, Fourth Street, Tuesday morning, August 27, 1890, of old age, Martin Stakeley, aged 92 years, 9 months adn 15 days.

Mr. Stakeley was the oldest man in town and one of hte oldest residents. A year ago we published a short sketch of his life (reprinted below). There has always been a dispute as to his real age, the family claiming that he was a year older, but his certificate of birth and baptism is dated Nov. 12, 1797, which would make his age as given above. This certificate is signed by the authorities in Germany and ought to be correct. The funeral takes place from St. Mary's Church this Friday morning, 15 10 o'clock.

Printed in the Freeport Journal, Ca. Aug/Oct 1890

The above is a very fair picture of our old friend Martin Stakely (in reference to an artists rendition of Martin), who enjoys the distinction of being the oldest citizen in Freeport. He was born in Reithe, Germany, on the 12th Day of November, 1797, and was baptized the same day in Ober Reithe. The family have always supposed that he was a year older but his certificate of birth and baptism in our possession at this writing shows the dates given, hence he was 92 years old last Tuesday. He is still able to walk about and was up street to his son John's one day within a week. He claims to have fought under Napoleon and to have been a high officer in the army. He left Germany in January, 1828 and his passport of ceertificate says there is no good reason why he may not return again, but we rather think he will end his days in Uncle Sam's dominion. The photograph from which the cut (artists rendition) was made was taken about ten years ago.

Printed in the Freeport Jounal, Ca. Nov. 1889.
