Sarah and William were married in 1870 in Nebraska.
(Lot # 43)
Mrs. Sarah A. Strunk was born in Ohio in 1840. In 1851 she removed to Iowa with her parents and to Nebraska in 1867. She was married to Wm. B. Strunk June 1st, 1870. They were among the pioneers of that state, living for some time 60 miles from the nearest store or post office. In 1885 they removed to this state and in April of 1886 to the farm on Mt. Zion, where they have since resided.
Mrs. Strunk was an invalid for over twenty-five years, confined to her bed most of the time. For years they struggled enduring hardships and privations, hewing for themselves a home in the wilderness. Mr. Strunk, often in feeble health, going two or three miles to work for the neighbors and returning at night carrying home his provisions to care for his wife before the children grew up the burden was largely lifted from his shoulders, thought Mrs. Strunk continued to remain in a state of almost helpless dependence. It was not till about the middle of September that any alarming symptoms became manifest, for 17 or 18 days before her death she would take no food or in fact anything except medicine and very small, small quantities of liquids. The Doctor immediately pronounced it cancer of the stomach and death was almost momentarily expected. She remained conscious to the last and a little before 9 o'clock p.m. October 12th she departed this life. The family were all present, her daughters having been summoned some days before. At her request Mr. Hudson took charge of the funeral and preached the sermon. The remains were laid to rest in Mt. Pleasant cemetery Oct. 14th. A large number of friends and relatives were present. She leaves a husband and four children – two sons and two married daughters – to mourn her loss. While we cannot sorrow for her sake, believing she has passed on to a brighter world, released forever from pain and sorrow, where we in turn shall follow, yet the sympathy of the neighborhood and of the many friends is extended to the sorrowing family in this sad hour of bereavement and sorrow, and we earnestly entreat them to look forward to a reunion, believing that their loss is her eternal gain.
