Birth: 1847
Alabama, USA
Death: Nov. 10, 1913

Robert Jemison Ball of Louisiana, enlisted in the Confederate States Army on March 2, 1863 in Jackson as a private. He was mustered in the Companies 1 & 3, Battalion, Washington Artillery, Louisiana. He was transferred to Stuart Horse Artillery in 1864. On February 20, 1865 he was admitted to the hospital at Petersburg, Virginia.

Special thanks to Brian Chastain for the following info) - I was researching Robert Jemison Ball thinking he may be related to a friend. (He is not).

He was born abt. 1847 in Alabama & died Nov. 10, 1913. He is said to be buried at Confederate Tomb, Truemans Cemetery, New Orleans LA. I have not verified that.

You would be interested in the information at http://genforum.genealogy.com/jemison/messages/328.html and http://www.newenglandballproject.com/g1/p1718.htm.

He can be found on the 1850 Census at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.2/M44G-9WH/p_232690787 (where you can see an image), and the 1860 Census at https://familysearch.org/pal:/MM9.1.2/MCQN-X48/p_383401021. If you go to http://www.fold3.com/ you can get an image of the 1860 Census page (under 2d Wd 1st Dist. City of New Orleans, p. 205). If you want the image I have it.

He is listed in Records of Louisiana Confederate Soldiers and Louisiana Confederate Commands, Compiled by Andrew P. Booth, as Ball, Robert J., Pvt. 1st and 3rd Co. Battn. Wash. Arty. Louisiana (1st and 3rd Company, Washington Artillery Battalion, Louisiana).

The entry is at http://files.usgwarchives.net/la/state/military/wbts/booths-index/b.txt.

His CMSR shows that he enlisted Mar. 2, 1863 at Jackson MS at age 15 (by his statement on his enlistment paper).

I would caution that most references on him mention First Louisiana Washington Artillery Regiment or something of the sort. There was no such unit. The First Louisiana Artillery Regiment was a separate unit. The Washington Artillery was a battalion, not a regiment, and was never known as the First (anything).
