William married Margaret Ann Stukes on October 5, 1854 in Manning, SC.

Private Clark enlisted in the Confederate States Army on May 15, 1862 at Morris Island, SC, Company I, 23rd SC Infantry (Hatch's Regt. Coast Rangers). He served under Col. Henry Laurens Benbow. He was with Gen. Lee's army when they surrendered at Appomattox Court House. He was paroled on April 9, 1865 at Appomattox, VA.
