Samuel Bates was a son of Samuel and Caroline ((Whitem (sp.?)) Bates. He immigrated to the United States in 1863 by way of Canada.
He joined the Grand Army of the Republic, Angell Post 411 in Mooers, New York on July 10, 1893. He was discharged on August 23, 1899. A 1901 newspaper article lists him as being a member of Samuel Cannon Post 374 in Mooers Forks and being elected surgeon.
