Elizabeth was a charter member of Martha Reid Chapter 19, UDC. She was the wife of Capt. William T. McNelty, who belonged to the Confederate Navy and performed active service in Charleston Harbor on the Steamer "Etiwan".

Her father, Samuel Buffington, was imprisoned several times for loyalty to the South although he was too old for active service. She also had two brothers, Samuel Buffington , who died after the Battle of Manassas; and Lieut. John C. Buffington of the 10th Florida Infantry, who fought throughout the war in Virginia, was frequently wounded and died in 1871.
