Musician. Born Salvatore Massaro, he was a virtuoso guitarist regarded as the father of modern jazz guitar. In 1924, he moved to New York, joined the Mound City Blue Blowers and made his first recording. A talented musician in the beginning of the electric guitar era, he was in demand as both an accompanist and a soloist. He performed with such diverse artists as Louis Armstrong, Benny Goodman, Bessie Smith, Bing Crosby and many more. From 1926 till his death, he served as house guitarist at Okeh Records with solo works to include "Pickin' My Way", "Eddie's Twister" and "Church Street Sobbin' Blues". He died unexpectedly from severe blood loss after a tonsillectomy operation. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
