Evelyn Fern (Warthen) McPhail, age 83, of Scranton, Kansas, died August 23, 2011. She was born March 18, 1928 on the family farm at Wheaton, Kansas, the fourth of seven daughters born to LeRoy and Elsie (Toothaker) Warthen. The family later moved to Topeka, KS, where Evelyn graduated from Topeka High School.


She married John McPhail on February 23, 1946. They lived in Scranton, KS their entire married life.


Evelyn was a homemaker and a gifted pianist. She played at local churches and was a member of the Scranton Assembly of God. In later years she attended Cross Road Community Church, Scranton, KS.


Preceded in death by her parents; and her husband, John.


Survivors include her four children, Carolyn (Dan) Workman; Ginger (Daryl) Shughart; Dennis (Lois) McPhail; Pat (Leon) Schroder; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two sisters, Ina Coley, Macon, GA; and Lolita Laubach, Topeka, KS. She especially loved her little dog, Tuffie.


We children will always be grateful to Mom for taking us to church every Sunday, where we learned to lead Christian lives. She taught us the old hymns of the Church and we still love them today. She will be forever loved and deeply missed. The family would like to thank the staff at Brookside Retirement Community for their loving care of Mom.
