HEMET JEREMY LUSK 11/26/1984 ~ 02/10/2009 We lost Jeremy early Tuesday morning in San Jose, Costa Rica. Jeremy suffered a severe head injury competing in a freestyle motocross competition on Saturday. With his wife, Lauren, at his side Jeremy battled and held on until his parents and other relatives were able to make the trip to Costa Rica. He was truly a warrior. In a sport that requires tremendous talent and unbelievable courage, Jeremy rose to the top of his profession. Winning gold at X-Games. With other numerous wins and podium appearances in the U.S. and Internationally, Jeremy was voted Rider of the Year for 2008. He was honored with the cover photo for Transworld Magazine. Only the third time a freestyle rider has received such an accolade. For those that knew him he was so much more than that. Jeremy grew up in San Diego and went to West Hills High School. It is there that he met his wife Lauren. They had a Fairy Tale romance and marriage. In their short time together they enjoyed a lifetime of experiences. Their home was always filled with love and happiness. Jeremy seemed to have special relationships with everyone he was close to. He and his father Chuck were especially close and the best of friends, forming a bond rarely seen. He was a dear son to his mother, Gina, the best grandson to Tom and Geraldine Lusk and Ray and Donna Gaxiola. He was the best brother-in-law to Melissa, Carmine and Brian. He was a special Uncle to all of his nieces and nephews. He was the best son-in-law to us, Larry and Lynn Harnisch. I was privileged and honored to have know him. "He was....simply, the best!" He will forever be remembered and loved Our gratitude extends to Brian and Marissa Deegan, Toby Bost, Cameron Steele, Ryan Hagy, Erik Apple, and the entire Mulisha Family, also Mauricio Maura of Costa Rica. Their help was invaluable and we will always be grateful. Contributions can be made to the Athlete Recovery Fund.com.
Jeremy Lusk, an American freestyle motocross rider, died of head injuries Tuesday after crashing while trying to land a backflip in competition. He was 24.
Jorge Ramirez, chief of the intensive care unit at Calderon Hospital where Lusk was taken, said the motocross racer suffered severe brain damage and a possible spinal cord injury.
Lusk won a gold medal at the 2008 X Games. He was injured Saturday night when he failed to complete a full rotation while attempting a Hart Attack backflip and slammed headfirst into the dirt. Lusk crashed in almost identical fashion in the freestyle semifinals at the 2007 X Games but was not hurt.
He had a successful 2008 season, winning Freestyle gold at the X Games and silver in Best Trick when he landed the first double-grab Hart Attack backflip. He won a bronze helmet in Freestyle at the Moto X World Championships in his hometown of San Diego.
Ramirez said Lusk died with his parents and his wife, Lauren, at his side.
"He was in a medicine-induced coma as a protective measure, and the medicine was being reduced to see how his organism responded," he said. "That didn't mean he was going to wake up. He was in shock and that got worse last night, until he stopped responding and entered into cardiac and respiratory failure."
Lusk lived in Temecula, Calif.
A trust has been set up in his memory, and donations can be made through the Athlete Recovery Fund, www.athleterecoveryfund.com
