Susan Lynn Baughman, 54, of Sterling and longtime resident of Akron, passed away after a courageous battle with cancer on Sunday, April 24, 2011, at the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley. Visitation was from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Wednesday, April 27, at Chaney-Reager Funeral Home. Funeral services were at 10:30 a.m. Thursday, April 28, at Faith United Methodist Church, with the Reverend Vivian Hiestand and Deacon John Wehrman officiating. Interment was at Riverside Cemetery.
Susan (Mumm) Baughman was born Dec. 18, 1956, in Yuma to Dennis and Arnitta Mumm. On Aug. 4, 1974, Susan married her high school sweetheart, Eddie Baughman. She graduated from Yuma High School in 1975. They were blessed with three children, Allison, Ryan and Shannon.
Eddie and Susan lived in Platner for five years before moving to Akron in 1980. Susan had a home daycare so she could stay at home with her children.
She was a Story Hour coordinator, Girl Scout leader and taught Sunday school for 30 years. She was also active in the Washington County Extension Homemakers. In 1990-1992, she was recognized as the Western Area Region Young Homemaker. She was the superintendent of the Home Economics building for the Washington County Fair. Susan was also elected for a four-year term as an Akron city council member from 1996-2000.
In 1992, Susan was hired with the United States Post Office and has worked in numerous post offices. Her potential and dedication was recognized when she became postmaster of Hillrose. In 2006, she was promoted to the postmaster of Akron. She then transferred as the Iliff postmaster in 2009.
Susan has been a very active member to the Daughters of the American Revolution, Fort Morgan Chapter. She has held various leadership positions throughout the organization. Most recently, she was elected as the corresponding secretary for the Colorado State Society. Additionally, she was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
The time she spent with her grandchildren, family and friends was cherished. She really enjoyed researching her lineage with genealogy. She was also very artistic and enjoyed crafts, counted cross-stitching and painting.
Susan is survived by her husband, Eddie Baughman of Sterling; parents, Dennis and Arnitta Mumm of Yuma; daughters, Allison Boyes and husband Mike of Wray and Shannon Brady and husband Mark of Colorado Springs; son, Ryan Baughman of Colorado Springs; sisters, Linda Johnson and husband Rick of Gays Mills, Wis., and Vicky Glanz and husband Bill of Otis; grand-children, Brittany Baughman, Elizabeth Boyes and Kaden Brady.
She was preceded in death by her in-laws, Ralph and Hazel Baughman; and sister-in-law, Betty Jane Sands.
Memorial donations in honor of Susan may be made to the Faith United Methodist Church of Sterling, Daughters of the American Revolution Fort Morgan Chapter or the American Cancer Society.
