Elden Elmer Haverstock age 87, of Canton, passed away Wednesday, May 11, 2011. He was born May 31, 1923 in Canton, Ohio to the late Elmer and Bertha Haverstock. Elden graduated from Canton McKinney High School. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marine's 5th division and took part in the invasion of Iwo Jima during World War II. Elden was present when the "flag raisers" raised the flag over Mount Serabachi and he was later wounded in action. He was a member of the First Church of The Nazarene of Canton were he served as Sunday School teacher many years and spent a lot of time with the children at Caravan. He also was a member of the Sons of The American Revolution and Disabled American Veterans. Elden retired from the Hoover Company after 21 years of service.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his son, Scott Haverstock; five brothers; six sisters and one great-granddaughter.
Elden is survived by his wife of 62 years, June; three children, Don (Vivian) Haverstock, Mark (Stephanie) Haverstock and Gayle (Michael) McFadden; 12 grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
Funeral services will be conducted on Monday, May 16, 2011 at 1 p.m. at First Church of The Nazarene of Canton, 522 30th St. NW with Pastor Mike Dennis officiating. Burial will follow in the Sunset Hills Burial Park. Calling hours will be held on Sunday, May 15 from 2 to 5 p.m. in the First Church of The Nazarene of Canton and on Monday in the church from 12 p.m. Noon until time of service. The Reed Funeral Home Canton Chapel is entrusted with the arrangements.
