Robert Royal was the son of Fredrick W. and Emma Bilstein of Alamosa, Colorado.
Robert served in the Company led by Captain Dwayne "Bobo" Mears and were known as "Bob's Bastards". On the beaches of Iwo Jima, assistant gunner Robert Bilstein saw Private Edward Wolenski get shot in the abdomen. Robert went to his aid and got Wolenski into a shell crater. Robert returned for his gun and tripod and moved forward with Corporal Deutsch. They were waiting for ammunition about 500 yards inland when Robert was shot through his head and killed in action (The First Battalion Of The 28th Marines On Iwo Jima: A Day-By-Day History; By Robert E. Allen).
