Miss Courtney Elizabeth Hayes, 23

Tragically, on January 12, 2010, Courtney Elizabeth Hayes of Douglas, GA passed away, a victim of the catastrophic earthquake that devastated the country of Haiti. Courtney was born on July 2, 1986, the second oldest daughter of Franklin Darrow Hayes and Angie Hinton Hayes.

Growing up, Courtney's favorite and beloved hobby was riding horses. She was an outstanding rider since childhood. She participated in multiple horse shows across the Southeast and was the recipient of numerous ribbons and trophies.

Courtney graduated from Coffee County High School in 2005. During her high school years, she was an avid cheerleader, student council member and a member of the soccer team. Upon graduation, Courtney attended the University of Miami and subsequently transferred to Lynn University in Boca Raton, FL where she was a biology major with a view to a career as a physician's assistant.

Courtney had a love for children and helping others. Along with eleven other students and two professors, Courtney went on the study abroad mission "A Journey of Hope" to help those people in the world less fortunate than herself. A Journey of Hope included working in the many orphanages in and around Port Au Prince, Haiti. The group was only in Haiti for one and one half days when the earthquake occurred.

Before leaving on A Journey of Hope, Courtney had organized a breast cancer walk for Lynn University.

Courtney leaves behind a family who loved her dearly. Survivors include: her oldest sister Lauren Hayes and beloved nephew, Nicky Poliseno; her youngest sister, Caitlin Hayes; her brother Matt Hayes; grandmother, Margaret Hayes, of Douglas, GA; grandparents, Zack and Laura Hinton of McDonough, GA; Zip and Debbie Hinton, uncle and aunt, of McDonough, GA; Dewey, Jr. and Clara Hayes, uncle and aunt, of Douglas, GA; Michael and Candy Powell, uncle and aunt, of Douglas, GA; and first cousins Jake Hinton and Alex Hinton of McDonough, GA, and, Audrey Powell and John Dewey Hayes of Douglas, GA. Courtney also leaves behind her beloved boyfriend, Matthew Sears, of Boca Raton, FL.

Courtney was predeceased by her grandfather, the late Dewey Hayes, Sr. of Douglas, GA.

A memorial service was held on Saturday, February 13, 2010, by Rev. Craig Hutto at the First United Methodist Church of Douglas.
