Bakken, Carl R. "Kully"
MADISON-Carl R. "Kully" Bakken, age 90, passed away on Thursday, Aug. 25, 2011, at HospiceCare in Fitchburg. He was born in Madison, the son of Melvin and Erna (Niederkloppfer) Bakken. Kully attended the old Hawthorne Grade School and Madison East High School, graduating in 1939. He then served his country in the U.S. Army during World War II in the 5th Armored Division, where he drove a tank, landing on Normandy Beach. Upon his discharge in 1945, he was hired by Madison Kipp Corporation, where he worked for 38 years, retiring in 1985. Kully was united in marriage to Kathryn Grady on May 29, 1947, at St. Andrew's Catholic Church in Verona. He was an avid golfer since his teens and golfed on the Kipp Golf League and the Eastside Club League. But, his passion was the Chicago Cubs. Kully was a charter member of St. Dennis Catholic Church and a lifetime member of VFW Post 7591. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Kathryn;
four children, Judith Bakken, Beverly Bakken, Kathleen (Dean) Loss, and Timothy Bakken;
three grandchildren, April (Alan) Rogers, Matthew Loss, and Caroline Loss;
sisters, Delores (Bill) Grady, Ellen (James) Tetzlaff, and Shirley (Orton) Erickson;
sister-in-law, Delores Bakken; and many nieces and nephews. Kully was preceded in death by three brothers, Robert, Wilbur and Ronald. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at ST. DENNIS CATHOLIC CHURCH, 505 Dempsey Road, Madison, at 1 p.m., on Saturday, Aug. 27, 2011, with Father Kent Schmitt presiding. Burial will be at Highland Memory Gardens. Visitation will be at the church from Noon until the time of the Mass on Saturday. Memorials may be made in Kully's name to VFW Post 7591, or HospiceCare Inc. The family would like to thank the staff at Oak Park Place and HospiceCare for the wonderful care given to Kully.
