World War II Victoria Cross Recipient. Born in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia, he served as Lieutenant in the 2/5th Australian Field Regiment, Royal Australian Artillery, 7th Division. On June 19, 1941, at Merdjayoun Damour area, Syria, the enemy attacked Lieutenant Cutler's post with infantry and tanks. Lieutenant Cutler personally supervised the evacuation of the wounded members of his party and succeeded in establishing another outpost right in the town. Engaging the enemy, his work on the only road by which enemy transport could enter the town was of vital importance and a big factor in the enemy's subsequent retreat. On the night of June 23, he was in charge of a 25-pound canon sent forward into the forward defended localities to silence an enemy anti-tank gun and post, he held up an advance attack and next morning the capture of Medjayoun was completed. On July 6, when the forward infantry was pinned to the ground by heavy hostile machine gun fire Lieutenant Cutler, went to bring a line to his outpost when he was seriously wounded. In his efforts, he lost a leg but saved the enemy from recapturing Medjayoun. For most conspicuous and sustained gallantry, he was promoted Captain and awarded the Victoria Cross on November 28, 1941. Following the war, Cutler began a long career in the Australian politics, served as High Commissioner to New Zealand, (1946-52), the Commonwealth to Ceylon, (1952-55). He was Ambassador to the Netherlans in 1956 and when he returned was appointed 32nd Governor of New South Wales in 1966 and served as the longest New South Wales Governor, ending his term in 1981. In December 1981, he was honored as Knight of the Order of Australia in. He died at age 85 in Sydney, New South Wales, Australia. (bio by: John "J-Cat" Griffith)
