Dorothy Ann Banks, 87, of Mill Road, Bellville, died Monday evening January 9, 2006 in Country Meadow Care Center, Bellville, following a short illness.
She was born March 18, 1918 in New Philadelphia to Roy and Coral (Matteson) Morse, and was graduated from Bellville High School in 1938.
On June 6, 1936 she met and fell in love with E. Eugene Banks. They married on September 3, 1943 and in February of 1948, they opened Banks' Soda Grill on Bellville's Main Street, with seating for 26.
Dorothy was co-founder of the former San-Dar Smorgasbord in Bellville. Though her husband usually took the credit, it was Dorothy who was the idea lady. She patterned the concept after one she had seen in Florida. So in 1954, with $50 seed money from her husband, Dorothy put on the first spread that birthed The San-Dar. To his surprise, her idea was a hit and Banks' Grill was transformed into The San-Dar Smorgasbord, earning acclaim statewide.
Dorothy was a member of the Mid-Central Ohio Restaurant Association, Ohio Restaurant Association and St. Paul Lutheran Church, Bellville.
Remembered for her creativity, she surrounded her home with begonias, chrysanthemums, and rose bushes ~ 125 rose bushes. She entered the Kingwood Rose Show…one year winning in every possible category, and then never went back!
She is survived by her daughter Sandy Homerick and her fiancé Glen Paramore of Bellville; her son and daughter-in-law Darrell E. and Marty Banks of Bellville; four grandchildren and their spouses Julie and Tad Leach of North Canton, Kyle and Vanessa Banks of Maineville, Jason and Lorri Homerick, and Jeremy Homerick all of Bellville; eight great grandchildren Jeremy Zucchero, Justin Homerick, Rebekah Homerick, Hannah Homerick, Zachary Homerick, Brynna Leach, Rhys Leach, and Gavyn Eugene Leach; five sisters and a brother-in-law Virginia Ellis of Owasso, Michigan, Geraldine Shirk of Bellville, June Herron of Bellville, Marcia Harrison of Mount Gilead and Ilene and Charles "Dick" Ridenour of Bellville; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband E. Eugene Banks on June 18, 2004, as well as by two brothers Elwin Morse and Robert Morse.
