Longtime Dentist Sam Rafish Dies

Retired Butte dentist and longtime member of the local Jewish community, Dr. Samuel Rafish 81, died Monday at his home in Casa Grande, Arizona. Born January 1, 1900 in Warsaw, Poland, he lived in London as an infant. Dr. Rafish came to Butte in 1906 with his mother to join his father. He atended Garfield School, graduated from Butte High and worked one year in the mines before entering northwestern university where he received his dental degree in 1921.

He married Dorothy "Daisy" Simon on January 1, 1930. She was a roommate of his cousin in Portland and they had corresponded eight years before meeting. They recently celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Dr. Rafish practiced dentistry in Butte 46 years and although he retired from the Butte office in 1969, he continued his practice on a part time basis.

He was a fellow of the American and International colleges of dentists, past president of the Butte Dental Society and Montana Dental Association member of the executive council of the Montana unit of the American Society of Dentistry for Children.

He was a member of B'nai B'rith, Masonic Lodge, Shriners, Elks and Chamber of Commerce. He was active in local fundraising activites for the Cancer Society.

Dr. Rafish was a member of he House of Delegates, American Dental Association. He was a consultant to the Mary E. Swift tumor clinic and a charter member of the American Association of Endonontia and member of American Academy of Peridontia.

He taught at Northwestern and Ohio State and taught dental assistants and student nurses in Butte.

He was honored by the Baron de Hirsch, the Butte unit of the B'nai B'rith in 1974 for 50 yeasr of service to the local Jewish Community.

Survivors include his wife, daughters, Marianna Ahrens of Casa Grande and Frances Bookey and Roslyn Greene of Bellevue, Washington; sister Sadie Shindell of Seattle; 11 grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren.
Cremation will be in Arizona. Memorial services are pending. 
Cremated, Location of ashes is unknown.
