From A History of Montana. 1739-1885: A History of Its Discovery and Settlement ...edited by Michael A. Leeson:

"Henry Jacobs, Butte, the senior partner of the firm of H. Jacobs and Co., was born in Baden, Germany. When nine years of age he emigrated with his parents to America, was brought up in the Southern States, and was a resident of Mississippi during the late war. He came to Montana in 1866 and opened a clothing store at Diamond, in company with Mr. L. Marks under the firm name of H. Jacobs and Co. In 1869 he closed out at Diamond and removed to Deer Lodge where he opened a similar store and carried on the business alone until 1876, when he removed to Butte City. He was one of the first merchants in the place and has been in business here continuously since. He now resides, and has made othee substantial improvements. He was elected the first mayor of Butte, and served one term; was chosen one of the School Trustees and served three years and has held many minor offices. He is prominently identified with several secret and benevolent societies, being an officer in the IOOF and President of the Hebrew Benevolent Association.

H. Jacobs and Co. Butte, is composed of Henry Jacobs and Herman Ganz. The business was established at Butte by Mr. Henry Jacobs, who conducted it alone until 1879, when he formed the existing partnership with Mr. Ganz. They carry an average stock valed at about $70,000."
