"Rev. Merrill J. Carlson died peacefully Nov. 15, 2010. Born Feb. 26, 1929, he was raised in Willmar, MN, and received degrees from St. Olaf College in Northfield, MN and Luther Seminary in St. Paul. He was ordained at Vinje Lutheran Church in Willmar on Jun. 22, 1958. Over the years, he served as pastor at Lutheran churches in Russell, Ellsborough and St. Paul, MN, and at Zion in San Antonio, TX, Trinity in Mission, TX, and Trinity in San Antonio. He retired in 1992, but continued to serve as a substitute pastor at various churches for some years. Rev. Carlson will be remembered as a man of strong faith, compassionate patience, and good cheer, always ready to tell a joke and greet everyone as a friend. He loved being with young people: leading confirmands at summer camp, setting up mentoring for school kids or mentoring them himself, raising his children, and playing with his grandchildren. He also loved a good project, from making wine from all manner of berries and fruit to building toys in his workshop for charities like Safeplace. Rev. Carlson is survived by his wife of 53 years, Rita Barsness Carlson, his children Renee, Gwenn, Sonia Lynn, Brian, Gregg and Darin and their spouses and children all in Texas, his brother and three sisters in MN, a large extended family, and many friends from throughout the years...."
