STE. GENEVIEVE CIVIL WAR VETERAN

Austin Bell

Private, Company K,
47th Missouri Infantry Regiment

He enlisted for a term of six months on 20 August 1864 in Ste. Genevieve at the age of 44 years old. He was mustered in at Pilot Knob, Missouri on 5 September 1864. His descriptive roll states that he had Grey eyes, Dark hair, Dark complexion and 5 feet 5 inches tall. It also states that he was born in Perry County and at the time of enlistment he was living in Ste. Genevieve, MO. His occupation was listed as farmer. He served with the regiment in Tennessee and was discharged with the Regiment on 29 March 1865 and entered the Post Hospital Ward No. 7 at Benton Barracks, MO on 31 March 1865 suffering from diarrhea. On 1 April 1865 he died and was buried in Jefferson Barracks National Cemetery in Section 45 Site 1218. On his Company Muster Sheet he was always listed as present and never listed as sick. Unsure of when he contracted the disease that would end his life.
In the 1860 Federal Census of Ste. Genevieve County there is listed the family of Austin Bell. I believe that this is Private Austin Bell even though the age listed on the census is forty-two. He was living in Beauvais Township in Ste. Genevieve County. His wife name was Mary and he has seven children, William, Bernard, Valle, Minerva and Louis who are twins, Francis and Felix. Six sons and one daughter. His occupation was listed as a farmer.
