Racing driver. Michele Alboreto was born in Milan, Italy, and he started motor racing in 1976 with a car of his own design and built by himself and friends. He began winning races in 1978 when he moved to Formula 3 and bought and old March. 1980 saw him drive in the European Championship as well as racing in endurance races for Lancia. He won the European title the following year. He eventually made his Formula 1 debut at the 1981 San Marino GP driving a Tyrrell. For 1982 he stayed with Tyrrell winning the US GP at Ls Vegas, and finishing 7th in the World Championship. In 1983 he again won the US GP, this time at Detroit. In 1984 he signed to drive for Ferrari, an Italian driving an Italian car at last, won the Belgian GP and finishing 4th in the World Championship. In 1985 he won two more Grand Prix, in Canada and Germany, but then followed three remaining seasons with Ferrari without a win. In 1988 he moved back to Tyrrell but at the end of the season moved to Larrousse. During the next four seasons he moved to Arrows, Scuderia Italia and Minardi but said a farewell to F1 at the end of 1994. He then began a carrer in sportscars winning the Le Mans 24hr race in 1997. He was killed testing an Audi R8 sportscar at the Lausitzring circuit near Dresden, when a rear tyre burst.
