Wilmer L. "Socko" Carper, 91, of R.D. 6, Danville, died Saturday Oct 29, 1994, in the Gold Star Nursing Home, Danville. He had been ill for the past six months. Born Jan 21, 1903, he was a son of the late George and Mary Jane (Gray) Carper. He was married to the former Cecelia Hinchwood, who preceded him in death in 1978.
Surviving are six children: Mrs. John (Sara) Moyer and Rolland Carper, both of Northumberland; Mrs. Mary Artley, Catawissa R.D. 2; John Carper, Danville R.D. 6; Lester Carper, Bloomsburg; and Mrs. Hubert (Grace) Phillips, Warminster; 22 grandchildren; 42 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren. Also surviving are three brothers: Harry P. Carper and William Carper, both of Huntingdon, and Willard Carper, Mill Creek.
Mr. Carper was of the Protestant faith. For a number of years, he had worked at the former Boyle Ice Plant in Huntingdon and had engaged in farming. He later worked for 16 years, as a equipment operator, for the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, until his retirement, in 1971.
Mr. Carper was also the champion hogcaller at the Washingtonville Fair for seven years.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Nov 2, at the Robert E. Peters Funeral Home, Huntingdon, with the Rev Ray L. Earlston officiating. Interment will be in Burket Cemetery, Warriors Mark. Friends may call at the funeral home Wednesday, from noon until the hour of the services.
