Albert Pertiet was a younger son of Wilhelm and Dorothea Pertiet. He was a carpenter by trade. He served in the United States Army during World War I. Later in his life he married a widow, Gail, who had lost her first husband and baby son.

During the Depression when jobs and money were hard to come by, he lived with his brother Bill and Bill's family on their farm, and worked as a hired man there. Bill and Atha also took in her brother Joe during that time.

In later retirement, Bert and Gail were houseparents at a girls' residence house on the campus of Northern Illinois University. After the death of Gail, Albert moved into his sister Ida's home, with his beloved cat, Whitey. Uncle Bert's retirement activity was drying flowers and making beautiful framed flower arrangements, in a modified Victorian style.

He lived with Ida until his death. Whitey continued to live with Ida until his own death a few years later.

Bert and Gail are buried in a family grouping with his brother Bill and Atha, his brother's wife.

The different spellings of the last name of Ida Pertiet and her siblings are not spelling errors. The original name was Petit, from Sweden.

The name was Germanized to Pertit, as is visible on the picture of the family marker at the West Dundee Cemetery. In the United States, where all the children were born, their parents let them choose whether to spell it Pertiet or Perteit.
