Shortly after noon on Thursday, February 18, 2010 Douglas Lynn McKinnon quietly passed away at his home in Willard, Utah after actively fighting a battle with cancer. He died as he lived, with quiet dignity in the presence of his wife. Douglas was born on May 16, 1938 in Ogden, Utah, the first of three sons, to Lynn McKinnon & Willa Kennedy. His first nineteen years were spent in Randolph where his father was a cattle rancher. It was there that he learned the value and blessings of hard work. After completing an honorable LDS Mission to Brazil, Doug attended Utah State University in Logan where he studied aeronautical technology. From a young child there was always a fascination with airplanes and this led him to his chosen field. While attending USU he met Marie Sorenson and on July 20, 1962 they were married in the Logan LDS Temple. They continued living in Logan for a few years and then moved to Willard, Utah, where they built the home they shared with their three children. In order to save money Doug did a lot of work on the home after work and on weekends. For a short time he was employed at the Ogden Airport working on private planes. As he was a licensed aircraft inspector Doug performed inspections on airplanes for various individual owners. In 1975 he began a thirty-two year career at Hill Air Force Base, first as an aircraft mechanic and later worked in the training offices. While there he developed many friendships which meant a lot to Doug. He often said he wanted to be remembered as "a good guy." His Church was a very important part of his life. Doug served in the Elders Quorum Presidency, as a Scoutmaster, Home Teacher, and as a teacher in all of the organizations, and was an active High Priest. After his retirement in 2007 he became interested in amateur radio and emergency preparedness. Doug obtained his ham radio license and also certified as a CERT Instructor. He freely gave of his time helping others with these activities. Even after his cancer took a toll on his energy he continued to volunteer. Family was a big part of his life and he was very proud of his three children and loved spending time with his grandchildren. Camping in the Uinta Mountains with his grandchildren was a highlight of every summer. Doug enjoyed woodworking, fixing anything, and reading any book available. He is survived by his wife, Marie, two sons, Shaun of Phoenix, Arizona and Corey (Becky) of Herriman, one daughter , Sheri Wyatt , Willard. There are six grandsons, one granddaughter and one granddaughter to be born in March. Also surviving are two brothers, Ross (Debra), Randolph and Brent (ReNee), Tremonton. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, February 23rd at 12:00 Noon in the Willard Peak Chapel, 665 W 7615 S. Friends and family may call Monday, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. at Gillies Funeral Home, 634 E 200 S in Brigham City and from Tuesday from 11:00 to 11:45 a.m. at the church. Interment, Willard Cemetery. The family wishes to express appreciation to Integrity Hospice for their special care and kindness. You may email condolences to the family at www.gilliesfuneralchapel.com.
