BALTIMORE CITY POLICE OFFICER
SHOT AND KILLED IN THE LINE OF DUTY
On February 10, 1967 Off. Kontner and his partner pulled up on a group of men in a known drug area at North Avenue & Guilford Avenue. The officers approached the men intending to get identification from them. One of the men started to flee. Off. Kontner chased him while the other officer stood by with the group of men. Off. Kontner chased the suspect to an alley on E. 23rd Street. As Off. Kontner turned the corner into the alley, the suspect who had taken up position behind a vehicle occupied by several citizens opened fire on the officer. Although mortally wounded Off. Kontner returned fire. Responding backup officers exchanged gunfire with the suspect killing him. Off. Kontner was awarded the department's Medal of Honor posthumously and is survived by his wife.
