Officer Dolan served with the Louisville Division of Police from August 1903 until his death. Four months before his death he was shot while on duty at Mellwood Ave. and Story Avenue while attempting to break up a bar fight. He died as a result of infection and shock due to an amputated leg that had been removed at the hip.
He was a member of the Ancient Order of Hibernians and Catholic Knights and Ladies of America. His funeral was held at St. Michael Catholic Church.
He was survived by a wife, brother James Dolan and sisters Sarah, Margaret, Bridget and Katherine Dolan.
