Nathan A. Gardner was the oldest of two sons born to Thomas and Louisa (Holt) Gardner. He had very red hair, which does not show well on this picture. He married Lucy Ann Johnson on Dec. 8, 1894 at the age of 25, his bride was 22. The family had seven children: Hettie Lu (given as Lu Hettie in one record. She was also red-headed), Luther Benjamin, Minnie Luvenia, John Hurlie, Lena Rachel, Annie Bell (died young) and Nellie Ann. His wife died about a year after little Nellie was born and Nathan re-married a widow, Mrs. Dora (Smith)Hodges, who brought one child into their union, Alice (her two boys Daniel and Hamlet worked by this time). After Nathan's death in 1934 she married a Mr. Tilley and was buried with him in their family cemetery in Durham. Nathan had 15 grandchildren and lived to see all but the youngest.
