Joyce, born in Newport, Australia, was the second of three daughters of Percival Bradlaugh and Florence Gertrude (Holtz) Thorn. Her sisters were Margaret Alice and Florence Elizabeth. Her paternal grandparents were Joseph and Alice Elizabeth (Young) Thorn, and her maternal grandparents were John Carl Joaquim, a German immigrant, and Margaret (Roberts) Holtz.

Joyce was a well-trained and very talented dressmaker until World War II when she worked in a factory for the war effort. She married Robert "Bob" Patrick McAdam on 4 July 1942 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Williamstown, Victoria, and was proud to have become a full time homemaker.

Joyce was the mother of two sons, Peter and John. She had one grandson, Shane McAdam, and two step-grandchildren, Brett and Keri.

Joyce developed Alzheimer's, which, according to her doctor, progressed rapidly from the stress she suffered after she and a cousin, Mavis McPherson, were mugged while shopping. Within a year or so of the incident, she was moved to Westgate Private Nursing Home on Williams Street in Newport. About a year later, Joyce suffered a stroke. She was taken by ambulance to the Footscray hospital, where she died.
