Joyce was a well-trained and very talented dressmaker until World War II when she worked in a factory for the war effort. She married Robert "Bob" Patrick McAdam on 4 July 1942 at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Williamstown, Victoria, and was proud to have become a full time homemaker.
Joyce was the mother of two sons, Peter and John. She had one grandson, Shane McAdam, and two step-grandchildren, Brett and Keri.
Joyce developed Alzheimer's, which, according to her doctor, progressed rapidly from the stress she suffered after she and a cousin, Mavis McPherson, were mugged while shopping. Within a year or so of the incident, she was moved to Westgate Private Nursing Home on Williams Street in Newport. About a year later, Joyce suffered a stroke. She was taken by ambulance to the Footscray hospital, where she died.
