Born in Pawlet, Rutland County, Vermont, Dyer was the sixth child of Elisha and Rachel (Kellum/Kellam) Fitch.
Dyer married Hannah Hadassah Hickok on married on 6 January 1807. By her, he became the father of four children, Chester Hickok, Philonso Skipio, Nancy Sophina, and Harriet Alvina. Hannah died a little more than two months after giving birth to their youngest child.
Dyer married for the second time on 19 February 1817. About a month after giving birth to Dyer's fifth child, Dyer Wetmore, his wife, Betsy (Wetmore) Fitch died.
On 21 September 1819, Dyer married his second wife's sister, Auralia White Wetmore. By her, he became the father of six more children: Mary Elisabeth, Charles DeWitt, George Clinton, Mariah Louisa, Elisha Parsons, and Samuel Augustus.
Originally a farmer, Dyer became a merchant after he and Auralia moved to Robinson, Crawford County, Illinois, via Braceville, Trumbul County, Ohio.
