Carl A. Bonstead, age 89, passed away December 3 at Regent Care Center in Reno. Carl was born in Graettinger, Iowa to Carl S. and Anna Bonstead. He entered the U.S. Navy Flight Training program in 1944 and qualified as an aircraft carrier pilot. He was called back to service in the U.S. Marine Corps in the Korean Conflict and flew 100 missions in 1952. He married Wilma Marlow, the love of his life, in 1946. After several years of farming in Iowa, he moved west and in 1966, he joined the U.S. Civil Service Commission and started the Office of Personnel Management in Reno. He also headed the Nevada sub-office in Las Vegas and traveled extensively throughout the state. He was active in many local community service organizations. In his active retirement years, he enjoyed sailing, snow skiing, and became a certified Master Gardener.
Carl was preceded in death by two brothers and a sister. He is survived by his wife, Wilma; his sister, Pearl; his son Robert and his wife Sheila; his daughter, Susan Munro and her husband, Dean; five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at Faith Lutheran Church, 2075 W. 7th Street at 10:30 am Dec. 8. Viewing hours will be held the evening prior at Walton's Funeral Home, 875 W. 2nd St. from 7:00 to 9:00 pm. Military interment at Northern Nevada Veteran's Memorial Cemetery, Fernley, will be held at 2:00 pm Dec. 8.
