The Forbes family had lived in NE North Carolina since 1701 and nearby Accomack County Virginia since 1678. Today, Forbes still live in Camden & Currituck Counties.
Many still live on the on the land granted to James Forbes in 1701.

In 1830 when the government opened up new land Caleb Forbes & his close friend Jesse Sawyer came to Illinois on horseback searching for a place to move. The North Carolina land was barely above sea level and subject to flooding in the hurricane season. They found rich high land in Marshall County that would never flood. The two men went back to NC and prepared to move.

On 2 Sep 1831 after a 5 month 1100 mile wagon trip the Forbes, Sawyers, and a few other NC folks (some Whites) arrived in Hopewell twp. All of Caleb's & Jesse's children came to Marshall County.

The move was a good one for the family. They set up a saw mill on the Big Sandy, bought much government land (close to 500 acres) and prospered.

On 29 June 1863 he wrote his will leaving everything to his wife, Mary. On 21 Sep 1864 Caleb died. Caleb lived a long life for the time, he was 81 when he died.
