Frieda Mae Landgraf was born in Saxony, (Germany). She was the daughter of Herman Frederick Landgraf and Henrietta Mehnert. Freida had a older sister Hedwig & a younger brother Herman. In 1891 when Frieda was 8 years old the family of 5 came to Detroit from Germany.
Henrietta, her mother, taught Frieda how to sew, which she enjoyed and did very well. But, life was not always easy for Frieda. Four years after arriving in America when Frieda was only 12 her mother died.
Her father Herman married 2 years later. As was too often the practice Frieda was not allowed to continue school. Instead she was required to work as a dressmaker and give her income to the family.
In 1907 Frieda met James Kennedy, the couple fell in love and on 1 Jan 1908 they were married with friends in Owosso, Michigan. Life was good for Frieda. The couple owned their home on 6072 Rohns free and clear.
James was working at Cadillac. In the next 9 years the family grew. Frieda had Ruth, John, Bernice, James & Helen. Frieda enjoyed taking care of James and her young family. She loved making clothes for the children and she taught her oldest Ruth how to sew as her mother had taught her. This was one of the best periods of Frieda's life.
After Thanksgiving in 1918 Frieda wrote a letter telling of the wonderful Thanksgiving the family had and how they were all looking forward to Christmas. Less than 3 weeks later Frieda and all of her children had caught the great flu. James did his best to nurse everyone but Frieda died on the 18th of December.
The children, ages 9 to 1 1/2 knew there mother was gone but they could not understand what had happened. Everyone immensely missed the love and care that Frieda had given them.
