Charles Copeland Dies On Sunday
Charles "Ed" Copeland, president of Copeland-Ryder Shoe Manufacturing Co., for over 25 years, died Sunday evening at the age of 84 years at Jefferson's Countryside Home, due to prolonged illness.
Copeland was a city alderman in the 1920's and a member of the Jefferson Water and Light Commision. He was a member of the Board of Directors of Farmers and Merchants Bank in Jefferson. He was also a member of No. Nine Masonic Lodge, F.&A.M.
Copeland was the third generation of his family to operate Copeland-Ryder Shoe Manufacturing Co., now Dr. Scholl's, 411 Wisconsin Dr. He was president of the company from 1930 to 1956. It was sold to Dr. Schnoll's in 1946.
He was born on April 24, 1892 in Jefferson. On Nov. 12, 1913 he marred the former Ruth Bender.
Copeland is survived by his wife, a resident of Countryside Home in Jefferson. Also surviving him are three sons and one daughter; Richard of Chicago; James, 302 West Linden Dr.; Dr. Quentin of Greendale; and Mrs. William (Margaret) Trumball of Vero Beach, Fla. There are nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. There are also one sister, Mrs. Adolph Hoenecke of Tucson, Arizona, and one brother, John of Beloit.
Private funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Curry Funeral Home with the Rev. Steven Fossum, St. Mark's Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial was in Greenwood Cemetery. The family has asked that all memorials be made ot the Jefferson Library fund.
