Howard Benjamin Franklin Downing (Downen) was born near Springfield, IL (note: Was actually Schuyler County, IL) on 22 April 1832 on a farm on Sugar Creek owned by his father Josiah Downing (Downen). At age of 19 years he went to California by oxen team. Met Kit Carson en route, joined the army to fight the Indian uprising, was honorably discharged at the end of the Indian uprising as he had volunteered for. He returned by way of the Horn to Illinois, paid his father six hundred dollars to compensate him for the time he was away under age. He was married in 1858 to Lydia Ann Howard and they moved to a homestead on the Kansas plains. Benjamin Franklin Downing family moved by covered wagon into Colorado, through Utah and eventually settled in the area of Cooke City, Montana. (Source: Craig Sonntag)
