Douglas was born June 1, 1951 in Rugby, North Dakota to Harold and Lois Himle. He died April 19, 2011 from multiple myeloma.

He grew up in Leeds and Devils Lake, ND, where he graduated from Central High in 1969. He spent a year at BYU before serving as a missionary in the England East Mission in 1970. In 1972, Doug joined the North Dakota National Guard.

He married his best friend and eternal companion, Kathleen Walker of Union, Utah, on February 2, 1974. They lived in Devils Lake, North Dakota, where Doug worked for Himle Construction until 1982, when as a Captain, he was asked to work at the Pentagon for the Deputy Chief of Staff Logistics.

In 1983, he began work for the National Guard Bureau in Arlington VA, as an Engineer Officer. In 1987, he served in Heidelberg, Germany and RAF Lakenheath, England.

Returning to the US in 1991, Doug was assigned to the Office of the Assistant Secretary of the Army at the Pentagon. In 1993, Doug returned to North Dakota to command the 142nd Engineer Battalion (Combat Heavy) in Fargo. He was then reassigned to the National Guard Bureau in Arlington, VA, as Chief of Training Support and later Chief of Training.

In 1998, he moved to Utah for his last assignment working with the Utah National Guard on military support to the 2002 Winter Olympics. After his retirement he worked as a Homeland Security consultant then, as the Facilities Engineer Manager for CMC at Dugway Proving Ground.

Active in the LDS Church, he served as a Stake High Councilman, Branch President, as a Seventy, High Priest Group Leader, Elders Quorum President, teaching assignments, and one of his favorites, Nursery leader.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen, children: Heather Shepherd (Jason), Alycia Moore (Sean), Paul (Karlie Holley), Eric (Elisa Kamper), and Megan Himle, eleven grandchildren, father, Harold Himle, brothers Wes, Steve, Curt, and Dave, sisters Barb, Sue. Preceded in death by his mother, Lois.

A viewing will be held on Friday, April 22, 2011 from 6:00-8:00 p.m. at Larkin Sunset Gardens Mortuary, 1950 East Dimple Dell Road (10600 South), and Saturday from 9:45-10:45 a.m. prior to funeral services in the Bluffdale Fourth Ward Building, 14400 South Redwood Road (1700 West). Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, April 23, 2011 at 11:00 a.m.
