Confederate States Army

There is a section of Rose Hill Cemetery, known as "Editor's Row", in which rests many of Brookhaven's founding fathers. Therein, stands a memorial to the 22 unknown Confederate soldiers who died at a temporary hospital, located on the campus of Whitworth College (now the campus of MS School for the Arts) during the Civil War. When they died, no one came to Brookhaven to claim them, and no records existed to identify them. Their bodies, originally buried at Whitworth, were exhumed in 1896 and carried a half-mile down Monticello Street to their final interment in a mass grave at Rose Hill Cemetery.
