Son of Johannes and ___ Schleiffer, who immigrated from Germany via PA.
John migrated to Frederick County along with Peter Gaver and Peter Miller. John married Asenath, daughter of Peter Gaver. John was a Reverend in the Brethern Church, serving in the Burkittsville area.
John and Asenath were both buried at the Slifer Cemetery along with several other early settlers. The cemetery was in such disrepair, their headstones were relocated to Pleasant View Brethern cemetery at some point.

Stone (but possibly not John) removed in the 1970s from the Slifer Cemetery on the Zecher farm, Distillery Road, half a mile south of Burkittsville (Sources: Holdcraft, Jacob Mehrling, Names in Stone, 75,000 Cemetery Inscriptions From Frederick County, Maryland, v. 2. Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1985, page 1042. and Cooper, H. Austin, A Pleasant View. Burkittsville, MD: Pleasant View Church of the Brethren, 1998.)
John Slifer did not serve in the Revolutionary War, (even though there is a marker there saying he did). This is discussed in the Pleasant View book and other places. He was actually fined because he (as are all Brethren) was a pacifist. His name can be found in "A List of Non-Enrollers Returned and FIned." Maryland Historical Magazine, V. XI, No. 1, p. 248-260, March 1916.
