Martha Craig T. Burress, 81, of Erie, Kansas, died at 2:20 p.m., Monday, February 1, 2010, at Labette Health in Parsons, Kansas. Death was unexpected.

She was born on November 2, 1928 at Booneville, Mississippi, a daughter of Henry Clyde and Mildred Glenn (McCarley) Tays.

During her childhood years her family lived at Booneville and later moved to Chickasaw (Mobile), Alabama where she graduated from the Murphy High School. She then attended Mississippi State College for Women in Columbus, MS and graduated in 1949 with a Bachelor's Degree in Elementary Education.

On June 21, 1950 she was united in marriage to M. Tom Burress at Booneville, MS.

They lived in Jonesboro, Arkansas for a year and then Mr. Burress was drafted, and enlisted in the United States Marines Corp. He was stationed at Honolulu, Hawaii where Martha lived too until his discharge in 1954. They then moved to Erie, Kansas.

She was a member of the Erie Federated Church. She was a board member, officer and chair of the Erie Library Board, a Red Cross swimming instructor, Camp Fire Girl leader, and also a part of the Monday Night Sewing Ladies. She was a member of the Red Hat Society, the American Legion Auxiliary and was a charter member of the Mem Erie Historical Society. She also volunteered at the Senior Center and served on the board of directors.

Her hobbies included reading, volunteering, making stained glass, sewing, knitting, and spending time with her children and grandchildren. She also loved playing Bridge and belonged to numerous Bridge clubs. She had a passion for traveling and loved taking bus trips, and trips with her grandchildren.

Survivors include her husband, M. Tom Burress, of Erie, KS; one son, Thomas Craig Burress, of Erie, KS; two daughters, Virginia (Ginny) Wommack, and husband, Joe, of Parsons, KS; Mary Kate Blankenship, and husband, Michael, of Hutchinson, KS; seven grandchildren, Jessica Burress, of Nucla, CO, Lani Witters, of Olathe, KS, Weston Burress, of Manhattan, KS, Katherine Asher, of Lawrence, KS, Emily Wegener, of St. Louis, MO, Andrew Wommack, of Boston, MA, and Christopher Blankenship, of Hutchinson, KS; three great-grandchildren, Isaac Witters, of Olathe, KS, Eli Witters, of Olathe, KS, and Xzavea Wommack-Johnson, of Parsons, KS.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, February 4, 2010 at the Erie Federated Church with Rev. Larry Jordan officiating. Burial will be in East Hill Cemetery, Erie, Kansas.

Memorials are suggested to the Erie Federated Church, the Erie Library or to the Mem Historical Society. These may be left at or mailed to the funeral home, P.O. Box 182, Erie, KS 66733.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Pierce-Carson-Wall Funeral Home of Erie, KS.
