John Pierpont "J.P." Morgan
Birth: Apr. 17, 1837
Hartford County
Connecticut, USA
Death: Mar. 31, 1913
Provincia di Roma
Lazio, Italy

Businessman. Considered a legendary figure in American Financial History, he is best known as founder of the banking house of "J. P. Morgan & Co.", which played a central role in the formation of General Electric Company, United States Steel Corporation, General Motors Corporation, and other major corporate deals of that era. Born in Hartford, Connecticut, the son of a successful international investment banker who operated mainly out of London, England, he was educated in Boston, Massachusetts and Germany, and trained as an accountant at the New York banking firm of Duncan, Sherman and Company. In 1867 at age 19, he transferred to his father's London office and ten years later became a partner in Drexel, Morgan and Company. This was reorganized as J. P. Morgan and Company in 1895, making it one of the most important banking houses in the world. In 1891 he arranged the merger of Edison General Electric and Thompson-Houson Electric Company to form General Electric Company, which then became the country's main electrical-equipment manufacturer. After financing the creation of the Federal Steel Company he joined with Carnegie Steel Company to form the United States Steel Corporation. Morgan maintained strong links with the London financial world and was able to arrange the capital for growing industrial corporations in the United States with money from British bankers. This enabled him to become a member of the board of directors in several of these companies including most of the major railroad companies - by 1902 he controlled over 5,000 miles (8,000 km) of American railroads. His program was compatible with many corporate titans, who wanted to absorb their competition by forming giant trusts and monopolies. John D. Rockefeller had done this by creating the greatest monopoly of them all, the Standard Oil Company, which brought order to a wildly chaotic industry. But no other capitalists in the country, except Carnegie, had money to form such gigantic combinations, so empire-building industrialists were drawn into the arms of Morgan and other formidable Wall Street bankers. This began the great corporate drift to New York when powerful capitalists like Philip Armour, the meat king, and Collis Huntington, the railroad king, moved to New York in the 1890s to be near big investment houses like Morgan and Company, Lehman Brothers, and Kuhn, Loeb. In his final years, J.P. Morgan concentrated on gaining control of various banks and insurance companies. This in turn gave him influence over most of the nation's main corporations. He died in Rome, Italy in 1913. (bio by: Edward Parsons)
