In 1952 he was appointed Superintendant of Long Beach Schools and served for 32 years until his retirement in 1984. He led the school system during its voluntary and peaceful integration in 1965-66. It was the only public school system in Mississipi to voluntarily desegrate all 12 grades in a single year. He led the school system in a quest for excellence and at the time of his retirement it was judged as being the No. 1 public school system in Mississippi. He served as the chairman of the state Accreditation Committee for the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges.
