"Dive Injuries Claim Life of Architect"

Alan K. Bourkland, 29, Rockford architect, who broke his neck Sunday, Sept 2, diving into a shallow part of Lake Winnebago, Wis., died at 6:24 a.m. Sunday in Fond du Lac, Wis., from failure of the respiratory system. His widow and Lloyd Ward, a lifelong friend, were with him when he died, and he talked with them almost to the end.
Mr. Bourkland had gone to the lake as a leader of the Rockford Sea Scouts ship 508, "Legionnaire", at Camp Shaganapi. He had been paralyzed from the neck down since the accident.
He was born Feb.24, 1927 in Rockford, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Edward Bourkland and lived all his life here. He graduated from East Rockford High in 1945, and the University of Illinois in 1956.
On April 5, 1951 he married the former Barbera Rogers in Dekalb.
Mr. Bourkland was a veteran of U.S. army service in Europe, serving twice - from July, 1945 to April, 1947, and from January, 1951 through December 1951.
He had been on the arcitectural staff of A. Reyner Eastman since last June.
Mr. Bourkland was active in Boy Scout work from the age of twelve until his death. He joined troop 6 in June, 1939, and was a member until joining the army in 1945. From 1942 until 1945 he was a member of the Boy Scouts and the Sea Scouts simultaneously. He was attending a Sea Scout rendezvous as a leader at the time of his accident.
Survivors include his wife and both parents; two sisters, Mrs. Barb Davison of Rockford and Mrs. Joan Johnson of Champaign; three brothers, Hugh Quentin and Kenneth, all of Rockford; maternal grandmother, Mrs. Ida Hanson of Rockford; one niece and one nephew.
Services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday at Wilbur-Christenson funeral home, 925 3rd ave., with the Rev. Harold M. Carlson, pastor of Bethesda Covenant church, officiating, burial will be in the Scandanavian cemetery.
Friends may call at the funeral home from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday.
