"Austintown - Levi Crum, one of the oldest and most known residents of this place committed suicide last Thursday night by drowning himself in Joe Smith's Ice pond. Mr. Crum had been a sufferer from rheumatism and other ailments for a long time and becoming despondent over his condition he determined to end his troubles. His plans were carefully made and carried out. While his niece, who kept house for him, was out a short time Thursday evening he slipped away, after first having left written directions as to the closing up of his business affairs and telling where his body would be found, he went to the pond and after tying a silk handkerchief lightly about his neck, waded into the water, only about two feet deep and leaned over with his head under it, in which position he was found dead by those who went in search of him. The deceased was 77 years of age. For many years he was successfully engaged in mercantile pursuits in this place and had a competency when he retired from business activities. He was twice married and leaves one daughter, Mrs. W. S. Fairman of Youngstown, by his first wife. He was a most genial man and had many friends. Funeral services were held Monday from the family residence, Rev. J. C. Schaaf of Canfield being in charge. Interment was made in the German cemetery north of Canfield."
