Nora A. Curlhair (1866-1952) was a housekeeper who never married. She kept a diary which was lost in 1991. (b. February 1866; Maine, Broome County, New York, 13802, USA - d. 1952; Maine, Broome County, New York, 13802, USA)

Birth:
Nora was born in 1866 to Freeman C. Curlhair (1834-1910) a harness maker, postmaster and cigar store merchant; and Lydia A. Gaige (1837-1903).

Siblings:
Nora's siblings include: Cora Curlhair (1865-?); Emma L. Curlhair (1869-?); Lynette Mae Curlhair (1872-1942) who married Benjamin S. Van Deusen I (1872-1937); and Orlow C. Curlhair (1878-1907).

Maine, New York:
In 1870 through at least 1880 her father was working as a harness maker but by 1900 her father was working as the postmaster for Maine. In 1887 she was listed as a Sunday School teacher for the Methodist Episcopal Church in Maine, New York. In 1903 her mother died, and in 1910 Nora was still living at home with her widowed father, but he died that year while working as a cigar dealer.

Diary:
Her diary was archived at the Nanticoke Valley Historical Society in Maine, New York. In 2009 the historical society said that they can no longer find the diary and that it has been lost or was never returned to the archive. The last person to have possession of it for research was Nancy Grey Osterud for her 1991 book, Bonds of community: the lives of farm women in nineteenth-century New York.

Servant:
In 1920 she was working as a maid in Union, Broome County, New York for Catherine Ford (1843-?) and her grandson, Orrin Parsons (1889-?). In 1930 she was working at age 62, at the home of Ida C. Miller (1856-?), a 74 year old widow, and her son at 13 Jay Steet in Binghamton, Broome County, New York.

Death:
Nora died in 1952 and is buried with her family at the Maine Village Cemetery, in Maine, New York.

Research:
Researched and written by Richard Arthur Norton (1958- ) for Findagrave starting on July 22, 2003. Updated on December 1, 2008 with the location of her diary. Updated on April 8, 2010 with an update on her diary and the 1887 reference to her as a Sunday School teacher.
