obit in the "Long Islander"
Monday, Mrs. Sarah Chichester, widow of Abner Chichester, passed away at her home on Fairview Street, after a long illness due to the infirmities of age. Mrs. Chichester was born in Plainview, near Hicksville, the daughter of Anne (Powell) and Kenneth Towne. When she was 17 years old she became the wife of Abner Chichester and they took up their residence in West Hills in the homestead, where it is said George Washington passed a night and where the late President Theodore Roosevelt was very often entertained. The Chichester home was alway open to the neighbors and often of a Saturday evening they gathered their for an hour of socialability. A daughter and son were born to the couple, Josephine, who became a wife of the late Will Jarvis, but she passed away several years ago. The son, Irving, also passed away and she is survived only by a grandson, Donald Chichester. About 20 years ago Mrs. Chichester purchased a residence on Fairview Street, where she has passed her sunset years. Funeral services were held from her late home Wednesday, the Rev. Albert E. Greanoff of St. John's Episcopal Church, officiating. Interment was in the cemetery in West Hills.
