He was the son of Rev. Zecharia Symmes, Sr (April 1599- Jan.1670), who was a graduate of Emmanusel College Cambridge, Eng. Zechariah, Sr. wed Sarah Baker in 1622 and they emigrated to "Massachusetts" from Kent, England on the ship "Griffin" with their seven children in Aug. 1634.

When Rev. Zechariah Symmes, Sr. died in Charlestown,
"he was honorably interred at the expense of the town. His grave was "covered and set comelie" by a stone-work laid in lime, together with a tomb-stone, procured by the selectmen of the town. The epitaph, which has been wholly effaced by the ravages of time, contained the following lines:

A prophet lies beneath this stone;
His words shall live, though he is gone "
