A.J. Kennemer

SAN ANGELO -- It was a great day in San Angelo, May 24, 1926, when A.J. Kennemer was born to Verda and A.J. Kennemer Sr. He attended San Angelo High School and enrolled in San Angelo College, but was then chosen for the ASTP Program during the war. Under General Eisenhower's leadership he was called to duty in Germany, Belgium and France. As a sergeant he had the exciting experience of being the driver for generals Eisenhower and Patton. During the Battle of the Bulge, A.J., as many others, suffered from severe frostbite. However, as all of the other soldiers with severe frostbite were shipped out for leg amputations, A.J. hid in the Hurtzgen Forest for several days till his unit regrouped and was redeployed to another battle location. When they moved out, he rejoined his comrades to continue fighting the Battle of the Bulge. Returning home to San Angelo, A.J. enrolled at Hardin-Simmons University where he met the love of his life, beautiful _{Living}_ Smith, of Lawton, Okla. A.J. was always happy and fun-loving and won her heart with his Christian character and charm. In six months they were married. They went every weekend to serve small churches while they were attending Hardin-Simmons University. After graduation, A.J. pastored at Faith Village Baptist Church in Wichita Falls, First Southern Baptist Church in Glendale, Calif., First Baptist Seminole, Harris Avenue, Grandview Baptist in El Paso and First Baptist in Littlefield. So loved and respected was he that he was called to First Southern Baptist in Glendale three different times in between other pastorates. Coming to San Angelo to take care of his parents, A.J. was again led to serve many churches at Bronte, Lohn, Edmund Boulevard and others. Whenever A.J. ministered, he gave his whole heart in passion for His Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. A. J. and _{Living}_'s 63 year marriage was supremely happy. Because they loved Jesus Christ with all their hearts, their devotion to each other was evident; one could tell their devotion to each other as they complimented one another. Their marriage was rewarded with the births of two wonderful children, a daughter, Melody and a son, Jeff. A.J. and Joan loved and nurtured each other through each day of their lives until Sunday, Oct. 10, 2010, A.J. met his Lord whom he had loved and served all of his life. He now is in the presence of the King. A.J. is survived by his wife, _{Living}_ Kennemer; sister _{Living}_ and husband _{Living}_ Wampler; son-in-law _{Living}_ Mark; and grandchildren _{Living}_ Kennemer, _{Living}_ Kennemer, _{Living}_ Kennemer and _{Living}_ Mark. A.J. was preceded in death by his daughter, Melody Kennemer Mark; and son Jeff Kennemer. A memorial service will be held at noon Thursday, Oct. 14, 2010, at First Baptist Church with Dr. Mark Bumpus and Leonard Hartley officiating. Arrangements are by Johnson's Funeral Home.
