Leon P. Woods, 81, of San Angelo died Saturday, Jan. 29, 2000, in a local care center.

Reared on a farm in Comanche County, he surrendered to preach at the age of 16 and spent his lifetime in the ministry. In addition to student pastorates and part-time positions since retirement, his pastorates included First Baptist Church of Saginaw, First Baptist Church of Grapevine, Harris Avenue Baptist Church of San Angelo, Calvary Baptist Church of Midland and Grandview Baptist Church of El Paso. He served as Army chaplain in World War II and in the Korean War and 10 years on the administrative staff at Howard Payne University, Brownwood. In addition to his pastoral ministry, Dr. Woods particularly enjoyed farming and raising goats and Angus cattle on his family homestead. In 1997, Harris Avenue Baptist Church declared him their pastor emeritus.

Dr. Woods held degrees from Howard Payne University and Southwestern Baptist Seminary. In 1961, he was awarded the honorary doctor of divinity degree from Howard Payne University. He authored a book, "Work of the Holy Spirit," published by Carlton Press, NY.

He served as a member of the executive board of the Baptist General Convention of Texas, the board of trustees of Howard Payne University, as moderator of the Concho Valley and El Paso Baptist Associations of Texas and on numerous committees of the Baptist General Convention of Texas. He was a member of the executive board of the Texas Alcoholic Narcotics Education Inc.

A man who possessed a genuine shepherd's and servant's heart, his spirit and ministry have blessed countless numbers of lives throughout the years.

Survivors include his wife, Maurie Forbes; a daughterand her husband of Clemson, S.C.; a son and his wife of Duncanville; four grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and a host of friends.

A celebration of Dr. Wood's life will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 2, at Harris Avenue Baptist Church with the Rev. Robert Webb and the Rev. Jim Turner officiating. Graveside service will follow at 3 p.m. in Eastlawn Memorial Park in Brownwood. Family visitation will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 1, at Johnson's Funeral Home.

Memorials may be made to Hospice of San Angelo, Sagecrest Alzheimers Unit or Harris Avenue Baptist Church.
